Notes

For optimal flavor, ensure bananas are ripe but still firm, not overly soft, to prevent mushiness and maintain their sweet integrity. To prevent browning, toss sliced bananas with a tiny bit of lemon juice, though this might slightly alter the taste profile. The extended chilling time is crucial; it allows the vanilla wafers to soften and absorb moisture from the pudding, creating that classic melt-in-your-mouth texture. For an elevated touch, consider using homemade whipped cream instead of frozen topping, and infuse the pudding with a good quality vanilla bean paste for a deeper aroma. A sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg can add a warm, complex note. Presentation-wise, ensure neat layers in a clear glass bowl for visual appeal, and garnish just before serving with fresh banana slices and extra crushed wafers.
