This sweet coleslaw recipe tastes like the slaw served at popular fried chicken or fish restaurants. It's excellent with burgers or on top of BBQ pork sandwiches, too!

  • 2 tablespoons diced onion
  • cup creamy salad dressing such as Miracle Whip
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon poppy seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Whisk salad dressing, sugar, vegetable oil, vinegar, poppy seeds, and salt together in a medium bowl until blended.
  • Pour dressing over coleslaw mixture and toss to coat. Chill for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

For optimal results, consider using freshly shredded green and red cabbage with carrots instead of a pre-bagged mix; this enhances texture and freshness. Ensure the onion is very finely diced to integrate well without overpowering. Adjust the sugar and vinegar levels to achieve a balanced sweet and tangy profile that suits your preference. A touch of celery seed or a small amount of Dijon mustard can add an extra layer of complexity to the dressing. Always chill for at least two hours, preferably longer, to allow the flavors to fully meld and the cabbage to soften slightly while retaining its crispness. Toss again just before serving.
