  • 2 Mugs or heatproof glasses For serving
  • 1 Strainer Fine-mesh, to remove spices
  • 1 Spoon For stirring and measuring
  • 1 Whisk (optional) If preparing whipped topping from scratch

Ingredients

Main

  • 2 cups water
  • 5 tsp instant coffee granules
  • 1/2 cinnamon stick 3 inches
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 5 tsp sugar
  • whipped topping optional

Instructions

  • Combine water, cinnamon stick, and whole cloves in a small saucepan.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce heat to low.
  • Simmer for 5-7 minutes to allow the spices to infuse the water, creating a fragrant base.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  • Carefully strain the spiced water into a heatproof container, discarding the cinnamon stick and cloves.
  • While the water is still hot, add the instant coffee granules and sugar to the strained spiced water.
  • Stir well until both the coffee and sugar are completely dissolved.
  • Taste and adjust sugar level if desired.
  • Pour the spiced coffee into two mugs or heatproof glasses.
  • Optionally, top with whipped cream or whipped topping before serving warm.

Notes

To extract maximum flavor from the cinnamon stick and cloves, gently bruise them before adding to the water. This releases more of their aromatic compounds. For a richer coffee base, consider using freshly brewed coffee instead of instant granules, adjusting the amount to taste. If using instant coffee, ensure the water is hot enough to dissolve it completely but not boiling, as extreme heat can scorch the coffee. Adjust sugar to individual preference. For an elevated presentation, rim the mugs with a cinnamon-sugar mixture or garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon over the whipped topping.
