Slow Cooker Green Bean Casserole

I made this crockpot green bean casserole to take to a friend's house for Thanksgiving dinner. I couldn't find a recipe I liked, so I mixed and matched and came up with this one. It was so good that I didn't have any leftovers!

Notes

For enhanced flavor, consider caramelizing a small onion and sautéing a few cloves of garlic before adding them to the slow cooker mixture. This builds a deeper aromatic base. To prevent a watery casserole, ensure the green beans are fully thawed and drained well if not using fresh. For a richer, more complex taste, substitute half of the cream of chicken soup with cream of mushroom, or use a homemade béchamel sauce base. The French-fried onions added at the beginning will soften significantly; for maximum crispness, reserve them all for the last 15-20 minutes of cooking or sprinkle them on right before serving, perhaps even giving them a quick toast in a separate pan or oven for extra crunch. Always taste and adjust seasoning before covering, as slow cooking can sometimes mellow flavors.
