Equipment

  • 1 Small Saucepan
  • 1 Whisk Or heatproof spoon
  • 1 Liquid Measuring Cup
  • 1 Airtight Storage Container For refrigeration

Ingredients

Main

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  • Measure 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and 1/2 cup of water.
  • Combine the measured sugar and water in a small saucepan.
  • Place the saucepan over medium-low heat.
  • Stir the mixture continuously with a whisk or spoon until all the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, but avoid aggressive boiling, which can lead to excessive water evaporation.
  • Once the sugar is fully dissolved and the liquid appears clear, remove the saucepan from the heat.
  • Allow the simple syrup to cool completely to room temperature.
  • Once cooled, carefully pour the simple syrup into a clean, airtight container.
  • Store the homemade simple syrup in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks, or longer if kept perfectly sealed.

Notes

For a richer syrup (often called 'rich simple syrup'), use a 2:1 sugar to water ratio. Always ensure the sugar is fully dissolved; heating gently and stirring consistently helps prevent crystallization. Over-boiling can evaporate too much water, making the syrup too thick. Allow the syrup to cool completely before using in cold drinks or storing, as this prevents dilution and maintains optimal flavor and texture. Consider adding aromatic elements like vanilla bean, citrus zest, fresh mint, or ginger slices to the pan while simmering for flavored syrups.
