Equipment

  • 1 Large Mixing Bowl For combining all ingredients efficiently.
  • 1 Rubber Spatula or Large Spoon For gentle and thorough mixing.
  • 1 Can Opener For opening canned fruits.
  • 1 Colander For effectively draining canned fruits to prevent a watery salad.
  • 1 Plastic Wrap For covering the bowl during refrigeration.

Ingredients

Main

  • 3 20 ounce cans pineapple tidbits, drained
  • 4 15 ounce cans mandarin oranges, drained
  • 1 16 ounce container sour cream
  • 1 10.5 ounce package miniature marshmallows
  • ¾ cup shredded coconut or to taste

Instructions

  • Mix pineapple, oranges, sour cream, marshmallows, and coconut together in a bowl. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate until flavors blend, 2 hours to overnight.

Notes

1. **Ingredient Quality**: While convenience is key, consider using fresh pineapple and mandarin segments for elevated flavor and texture, though it will increase prep time. If using canned, ensure thorough draining to prevent the salad from becoming watery. Gently squeeze excess liquid from the pineapple.2. **Flavor Enhancements**: For a richer, tangier profile, a mix of sour cream and a touch of cream cheese or even plain Greek yogurt can be used. A splash of vanilla extract can deepen the overall flavor.3. **Texture Variation**: Toasted shredded coconut can add a lovely nutty aroma and textural contrast. For an authentic touch, incorporate maraschino cherries for color and a hint of sweetness, or a small amount of pecans if nuts are desired (and not a dietary restriction).4. **Chilling is Crucial**: The extended chilling time is vital; it allows the marshmallows to soften and the flavors to meld, creating a more cohesive and delicious salad.
