Margarita On The Rocks

These Sprite margaritas are the best I've ever tasted — they look, smell, and taste more "pure" than any others I've had. A successful and upscale Mexican cantina nearby makes them. I always assumed they were using all top-shelf ingredients until I found out their secret: lemon-lime soda! Now I'm able to recreate them at home.

Equipment

  • 2 Margarita Glasses
  • 1 Cocktail Shaker
  • 1 Jigger or Measuring Cups For accurate liquid measurements
  • 1 Small Plate For rimming salt
  • 1 Lime Wedge For moistening glass rim (optional)

Ingredients

Main

  • 1 pinch kosher salt for rimming glasses
  • ice cubes
  • ½ cup silver tequila
  • ¼ cup sweetened lime juice such as Rose's®
  • ¼ cup triple sec
  • ¼ cup lemon-lime soda or to taste

Instructions

  • Rim 2 margarita glasses with salt, if desired, and fill with ice. Pour tequila, sweetened lime juice, triple sec, and lemon-lime soda into a shaker filled with ice, hold your hand firmly over the top of the shaker so it doesn't pop off from the carbonated soda. Shake vigorously. Pour into prepared margarita glasses, and serve.

Notes

1. Chilling your ingredients beforehand, especially the tequila and triple sec, will result in a colder, less diluted cocktail.2. For the salt rim, use a fresh lime wedge to moisten the rim of the glass before dipping it into kosher salt. A finer salt or a dedicated margarita salt works best for adhesion.3. The lemon-lime soda adds a unique effervescence and a balanced sweetness, which is the 'secret' ingredient here. Be mindful of the carbonation when shaking; a firm grip on the shaker lid is crucial.4. Garnish with a fresh lime wheel or wedge for an aromatic finish and visual appeal. You can also adjust the amount of soda to taste, depending on your preferred sweetness.
