Limoncello Lemon Sorbet (with or without Mint)

This limoncello sorbet recipe is a concoction I came up with when I couldn't find quite what I was looking for. It is absolutely foolproof. It's simple, sweet, and tart, with just enough limoncello liqueur. Serve with a sprig of mint or fresh berries. Top with limoncello or vodka if desired.

Equipment

  • 1 Saucepan Medium-sized for syrup preparation
  • 1 Whisk or Spoon For stirring syrup and combining ingredients
  • 1 Lemon Zester or Microplane For finely zesting the lemon
  • 1 Ice Cream Maker Essential for achieving the correct sorbet texture
  • 1 Freezer-Safe Container For freezing the sorbet until firm

Ingredients

Main

  • 2 ½ cups cold water divided
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves Optional
  • 1 lemon zested, or more to taste
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice
  • ½ cup limoncello liqueur

Instructions

  • Combine 1 cup water, sugar, and fresh mint leaves in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a light boil, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in lemon zest. Let syrup cool slightly, about 10 minutes.
  • Mix remaining 1 1/2 cup water, lemon juice, and limoncello liqueur into syrup.
  • Pour mixture into an ice cream maker; churn according to the manufacturer's instructions, 10 to 15 minutes. Freeze until firm, about 6 hours.

Notes

Achieving a perfectly smooth sorbet starts with a well-prepared simple syrup; ensure the sugar is fully dissolved without over-reducing the liquid. Infusing the mint and lemon zest off the heat allows for a more vibrant, fresh flavor without bitterness. Crucially, cool the syrup thoroughly before combining with lemon juice and limoncello, as warmth can negatively impact the final texture of your sorbet and the effectiveness of your ice cream maker. For optimal results, ensure your ice cream maker's bowl is sufficiently pre-chilled. The quality of your limoncello will significantly influence the sorbet's depth; opt for a good brand. For service, consider a chilled serving glass and garnish with a fresh mint sprig or delicate candied lemon peel. A splash of chilled prosecco or a dry sparkling wine over the sorbet can elevate it into an elegant dessert.
