Equipment

  • 1 Large Microwave-Safe Mixing Bowl
  • 1 Spatula or Mixing Spoon
  • 1 Casserole Dish Approx. 1.5 to 2-quart capacity

Ingredients

Main

  • 2 14.5 ounce cans green beans, drained
  • 1 10.5 ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese divided
  • 1 6 ounce can French-fried onions

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Mix green beans and condensed soup together in a large microwave-safe bowl until well combined. Microwave on high until warm, 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Stir 1/2 cup Cheddar cheese into the green bean mixture. Microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Transfer mixture to a casserole dish and spread evenly over the bottom. Sprinkle remaining Cheddar over top, then sprinkle with the French-fried onions.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is melted and the onions are just turning brown, about 10 minutes.

Notes

For enhanced flavor, consider sautéing a small diced shallot or a handful of fresh sliced mushrooms with a pinch of thyme before adding them to the green bean mixture. This adds an extra layer of umami and aromatic depth. To achieve a superior texture, use fresh or frozen blanched green beans instead of canned; they retain more bite and vibrant color. Be mindful not to overbake, as the canned green beans can become overly soft and the French-fried onions can burn quickly. For an extra crispy topping, you can toast the French-fried onions separately in a dry pan for a minute or two before adding them to the casserole.
