Do you all remember the sudden popularity of the low carb diet trend when it was claimed that zoodles (zucchini noodles) could somehow replace real noodles? Oh, not only were we collectively duped, but many of us were duped into buying disposable spiralizers that are now gathering dust in the back of our kitchen cabinets.
The promise was enticing: replace sinful pasta with zucchini spirals for healthier eating. However, the reality was far from the dream. I remember when I first tried zucchini spaghetti with great anticipation, and what I got was a plate of watery, disappointing spaghetti. But this culinary faux pas caused a sensation, setting off a wave of low-carb diets such as the keto diet.
Of course, there are some “die-hard” enthusiasts who preach Zoodles. claiming that with just the right amount of tossing and seasoning, Zoodles can be elevated from the lows of gooeyness to the level where they can be served as a meal. However, time and time again, these methods fail.
In addition to personal kitchen experiments, Zoodles have infiltrated menus and recipe blogs, touted as the holy grail for anyone who wants to reduce their carb intake without compromising flavor. But realistically, no amount of flavorful sauce or toppings can hide the fact that we’re eating watery groundnuts masquerading as pasta.

The zoodle fiasco warns of the risks of blindly following food trends. It reminds us that not all innovations are worth the hype, and that sometimes classics are classics for a reason. So let’s honor the real pasta.
After the frenzy of debunking the “pasta craze,” you might think we’ve learned our lesson about how to respond to popular food trends. But history always repeats itself. Let’s dive into other culinary misconceptions that have us scratching our heads and clutching our bellies in despair.
Cauliflower Everything – Remember when cauliflower suddenly became …… a substitute for, well, everything? Pizza crust, rice, mashed potatoes, steak (yes, cauliflower steak is a thing). This was done in an effort to sneak more veggies into our diets, but it often turned out to be a cruel joke on our taste buds. Cauliflower Crust Pizza crumbles as soon as you add toppings? Rice with more water than substance? It’s like we’re punishing ourselves for trying to eat healthier.
Kale Overdose – Kale has burst into our lives with smoothies, salads, chips, and even cakes being overrun by kale. While kale does have nutritional value, its bitter taste and hard texture have many of us wondering if it’s worth the effort to eat healthy. Furthermore, the kale craze seems to imply that if you don’t jump on the kale bandwagon, your diet is somehow failing.

Activated Charcoal – Pitch-black burgers, ice cream and lemonade made with activated charcoal are making waves on Instagram for their gothic appeal. The trend has been dubbed a detox miracle, with people cleansing their bodies by consuming charcoal.
Bone Broth – Drinking broth made from bones has become the hot new health trend, claiming that it improves everything from skin to gut health. While there’s nothing wrong with a good broth, the idea of drinking it straight from the cup on your way to work isn’t nearly as appealing as drinking coffee in the morning.
While it’s fun to experiment with following food trends, it’s also okay to stick to your favorites. After all, eating should be about enjoyment, not just about catching up with the latest food trend.
