Equipment

  • 1 Large Skillet or Cast Iron Pan For searing steak and sautéing vegetables
  • 1 Cutting Board For prepping steak and vegetables
  • 1 Sharp Chef's Knife For slicing steak and vegetables
  • 1 Baking Sheet For toasting assembled sandwiches
  • 1 Tongs or Spatula For handling steak and vegetables

Ingredients

Main

  • 1 pound Flat Iron Steak
  • ½ cups Zesty Italian Salad Dressing
  • Black Pepper
  • 1-½ Tablespoon Canola Oil Divided
  • 1 bag 12 Oz Frozen Mixed Vegetables (broccoli, Squash, Green Beans, Etc.)
  • 1 bag 8 Oz Frozen Three-pepper And Onion Blend
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Salt
  • 5 whole Large Hoagie Rolls
  • 8 slices Pepper Jack Cheese
  • 1-½ cup Pizza Sauce or Marinara
  • 1-½ cup Mozzarella Cheese Grated

Instructions

  • Trim flat iron steak, then cut into thin strips against the grain and marinate in zesty Italian salad dressing for at least 30 minutes, seasoned with black pepper.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon canola oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the marinated steak in batches until browned and cooked to desired doneness, then set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the remaining ½ tablespoon canola oil. Add frozen mixed vegetables and the three-pepper and onion blend, seasoning with garlic salt.
  • Sauté vegetables until tender-crisp and slightly caramelized, approximately 5-7 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice hoagie rolls lengthwise, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  • Spread pizza sauce generously on the cut sides of each hoagie roll.
  • Layer the cooked steak strips and sautéed vegetables evenly into each hoagie roll.
  • Top the steak and vegetable mixture with slices of pepper jack cheese and grated mozzarella cheese.
  • Place the assembled hoagie rolls on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
  • Remove from oven, let cool slightly, then serve warm.

Notes

For optimal flavor and tenderness, marinate the flat iron steak for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight. Sear the steak on high heat to develop a beautiful crust, then allow it to rest before slicing against the grain to ensure juiciness. Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the vegetables; work in batches if necessary to achieve proper caramelization rather than steaming. Using a robust pizza sauce will elevate the overall profile. For an extra touch, lightly toast the hoagie rolls before assembling to prevent sogginess, then finish in the oven until the cheese is bubbling and golden.
