This figure is shocking and highlights the gravity of the crisis in certain regions. The situation is dire, with some countries bearing the brunt of the impact. For many, securing enough food has become a daily focus.
This article will draw on insights from the Global Hunger Index (GHI). The GHI tracks hunger conditions based on indicators such as malnutrition, while also considering child mortality rates. We will focus on the countries with the worst food situations—not in terms of taste, but in terms of the most severe hunger issues. Severe hunger and malnutrition are among the most pressing issues today. This represents a profound challenge to global food security.
In the Global Hunger Index 2024 shows Somalia at the top of the list. It falls squarely in the “severity of hunger category. This level of severity is the second highest in the Global Hunger Index. This level indicates that people here face serious challenges that require food.
According to the key indicators, Somalia has an index value of 44.1. The GHI carefully assesses hunger levels by measuring these indicators. Indicators include the percentage of the population that is undernourished. It also includes the rate of stunting and wasting in children. This has a significant impact on the long-term health and development of young children. Sadly, child mortality is also used.
Think about what this high score means. Many people don’t get enough calories or nutrients, and children’s growth and development are severely affected by food deficiencies. This can lead to lifelong health problems. Sadly, too many young lives are now lost here.
Next on the list is Yemen. Yemen’s Global Hunger Index for this year is 41.2. This score once again places Yemen in the category of “hunger of concern”. This is yet another country where food is a basic need.

Major humanitarian interventions are needed across the globe.The GHI framework bases its scores on key indicators that are used with caution. These include the prevalence of malnutrition.

Now, this index is just shy of the 35-point threshold for the “worrisome” category. Nonetheless, the country remains firmly in the “severe hunger” category.
A value of 34.9 indicates that a significant proportion of the population is undernourished. They do not consistently consume enough calories and nutrients. It appears that many young children are now affected by inadequate food.
Haiti’s Global Hunger Index for 2024 this year is 34.3. This score also falls into the category of “severe hunger”. Haiti is grappling with major food security challenges.
“Severe” category – The GHI defines this category as a score between 20.0 and 34.9. Although somewhat better than in previous countries, a significant proportion of the population remains undernourished and there continues to be a generalized lack of adequate nutritious food. Many children are still deprived of the food they need for normal growth, leading to stunting and wasting.
